After Your GVM Upgrade: What Drivers Need to Know About Servicing, Compliance and Load Management
Getting a GVM upgrade is only the first part of the job. Once the work is done and your vehicle is driving out of the workshop with an updated compliance plate, there are ongoing responsibilities that a lot of owners are not fully prepared for. Skipping these steps does not just risk premature wear on the components that were just fitted, it can also put your legal compliance and insurance cover back in question.

Your Compliance Plate Has Changed, So Has Your Legal Responsibility
The moment your vehicle is issued with an updated compliance plate following a GVM upgrade, its legal status changes. The new GVM is now recorded on that plate, and that figure is what transport authorities, insurers and fleet operators will refer to if your vehicle is ever weighed, involved in an incident, or subject to a compliance check.
This means the vehicle must be operated within the new rated GVM at all times. Exceeding it, even with upgraded components fitted, carries the same legal exposure as operating over the original GVM before the upgrade was done. The compliance plate records the new limit, not a blanket permission to load without thinking. Knowing your loaded vehicle weight and understanding how to manage it within the new rating is a practical responsibility that comes with the upgrade.
Suspension Servicing After a GVM Upgrade
One of the most important things to understand after a GVM upgrade is that the suspension components now carrying your load are working harder than the factory setup was designed for. Upgraded springs, shocks and associated components from brands like Dobinsons, EFS or Pedders GVM+ are engineered to handle the additional weight, but they still require servicing at regular intervals to perform correctly and safely over time.
As a general guide, suspension components on a GVM-upgraded vehicle should be inspected more frequently than the standard manufacturer schedule, particularly if the vehicle is regularly loaded close to the new GVM rating or used on unsealed roads and rough terrain. Specific service intervals will depend on the components fitted and how the vehicle is used, which is something our team covers when the upgrade is completed. Common items to monitor after a GVM upgrade include:
Leaf spring or coil spring condition and seating
Shock absorber performance and any signs of leaking or fade
Bush wear across upper and lower control arms and sway bar links
Brake performance and pad wear, particularly if brake upgrades were part of the job
Tyre wear patterns, which can indicate whether load distribution is even
Wheel alignment, which can shift under consistent heavy loading
Any of these showing early wear or unusual behaviour is worth investigating promptly. Catching a worn bush or a shock that is starting to fade before it becomes a problem is far cheaper than dealing with the downstream effects of running degraded components under load.
Brake Servicing After an Upgrade
One area that sometimes gets overlooked in post-upgrade servicing is brake system maintenance. If brake upgrades were included as part of your GVM package, those components are now carrying more of the stopping responsibility than the factory setup was. Upgraded brake pads and rotors still wear, and the rate of wear on a vehicle regularly loaded to its new GVM can be faster than on a vehicle running under lighter loads.
Brake fluid condition is worth checking at every service interval as well. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can affect performance under sustained braking, particularly on long downhill runs with a loaded vehicle or towing a float. This is a straightforward and low-cost item to address on a regular basis, but it tends to be deferred on working vehicles that are only brought in when something is clearly wrong.
Load Management After a GVM Upgrade
Load management is an area that catches a lot of GVM upgrade owners off guard after the work is done. The upgrade increases your legal carrying capacity, but how the weight is distributed in the vehicle matters just as much as the total weight itself.
Overloading the rear tray while leaving the front axle light is a common pattern in working utes, and it creates steering instability and accelerated rear component wear even when the vehicle is technically within its upgraded GVM. Likewise, carrying heavy items high in the load rather than low and centred raises the vehicle's centre of gravity, which affects handling in emergency situations and on unsealed roads.
Some practical load management habits worth building in after a GVM upgrade:
Distribute weight as evenly as possible across the tray, front to back and side to side
Keep heavier items low and as close to the centre of the vehicle as practical
Factor in fuel, passengers and any permanently fitted accessories when calculating payload
Do not treat the GVM figure as the everyday target, leave reasonable buffer for safe handling
What About Towing After an Upgrade
If your GVM-upgraded vehicle is also used for towing, remember that your Gross Combination Mass remains a separate figure that the upgrade did not change. GCM is set by the manufacturer and is not derived from your GVM, so a GVM upgrade on its own does not increase your legal combined weight limit. A vehicle loaded near its new GVM limit and then hitched to a heavy trailer can push the combination weight beyond the GCM limit, even though both the vehicle weight and the trailer weight might individually seem reasonable.
Before adding a tow load to a GVM-upgraded vehicle, it is worth calculating the combination weight in full: loaded vehicle weight plus trailer and its load. This is particularly relevant for stock work, where float and animal weight can vary significantly from trip to trip.
Wheel Alignment and Long-Term Wear
Wheel alignment deserves attention after a GVM upgrade, and again periodically if the vehicle covers significant distance on rough roads or carries heavy loads regularly. Changes to suspension geometry that occur during the upgrade process, and ongoing settling of new components under load, can shift alignment from where it was set at the time of installation. Misalignment shows up in tyre wear first, typically as uneven wear across the tread face or faster wear on one side of an axle. Catching it at the tyre stage is still early enough to correct without damage. Ignoring it means the tyres tell you long after the handling and fuel efficiency have already been quietly affected.
Notify Your Insurer
After any upgrade work, it is also worth notifying your insurer that the vehicle has been modified. Most insurers require disclosure of significant vehicle modifications, and a GVM upgrade that changes the compliance plate is generally considered a significant modification. Failure to disclose can leave a claim at risk if the modification is identified during an assessment.
